Report: AJ's Close Crew Encounters at World of Dance NY and ABDC crew workshops (with video)

AJ reports on his unique experiences at World of Dance NY, dance workshops with Blueprint Cru, Heavy Impact, Static Noyze and Poreotix, AND Poreotix performing at Amnesia Night Club. Thanks for the write-up, AJ!

Saturday was an awesome experience at the World of Dance NY.  I got to spend a good amount of time hanging out and chit-chatting with Poreotix, Blueprint Cru, Jungle Boogie, and Static Noyze.  In fact, seated right behind us were the members of Blueprint Cru, Leon from Heavy Impact, and Gustavo from Static Noyze.  Everyone was easy to approach and being so nice to their fans.

Poreotix were especially cool.  I mentioned to their manager that I had made a JC "Tic Tic Tic" video and thanked them for sending me a free shirt for it.  When they found out that it was me who made that video, they wanted to meet and take pictures with ME (which was awesome).  And then, Dumbo gave me ANOTHER free shirt.  In a nice gesture, they said that my video was what inspired them to make their signature "Tic Tic Tic" shirt (real talk?).

As far as the performances.  All ABDC exhibition routines were awesome.  The crowd was the definitely the loudest during Poreotix.  Near the end of their set, the music got muffled, but they kept on dancing, and as you can hear from youtube videos, the place ERUPTED when Dumbo started air humping.  Competition wise, it was all about Australia's PSYDE PROJECT.  They had difficulty getting their music started, so anticipation was building up.  I remember saying, "aw man, these guys better kill it...".  And luckily, they DID!  Choreo was clean and tight - stunts/tricks were highly entertaining - and their music selection was great.  Then near the end of their routine, their music CUT OUT!  The crowd started giving them sympathy cheers, but in an act of TRUE PROFESSIONALISM, they continued their routine without the music (still remaining clean and tight).  When they finished, the building nearly shook by the crowd's applause. Of course, at the end of the night, they took home the 1st Place prize and it was a truly beautiful moment at the WoD.  All in all, it was a great night.

The next day, I attended three ABDC workshops at Pearl Studios in NYC.  First was Blueprint Cru's Lorena.  The best part of it was that all of Blueprint Cru took the class too.  Right next to me was Derek and Nick and they were just killing the routine with so much energy and passion.  It was awesome.  Leon from Heavy Impact showed up (his workshop was next) and members from Jungle Boogie even dropped in to say 'hello'  After their workshop, they were all happy to take any and all pictures with us.  They're all really nice people.

Report on World of Dance New York - winners, ABDC crews, fans!

World of Dance NY in Brooklyn on May 29, 2010 was HOT for many reasons:

• The event was sold out, as over 4200 people filled Brooklyn Tech.
• 43 different crews performed, including America's Best Dance Crew Season 5 alums (Poreotix, Blueprint, Jungle Boogie, Static Noyze 6) and ABDC5 Season 4 alums (Beat Ya Feet Kings, Rhythm City, Fr3sh, Southern Movement)
• It was not just a local show this year; there were crews from all over the U.S., as well as one crew (Psyde Project) from Australia and several from Canada
• The ABDC crews talked to fans and signed autographs for more than an hour
• There was no air conditioning!

Congratulations to the winning crews -- Psyde Project from Australia took first place, Static Noyze (the larger group, not the one on ABDC5) took second place, and The Family from Montreal won third place. Other awards: Static Noyze also won Best Theme, Project D won Best Costume, and Psyde Project was the Crowd favorite.

I got to WOD 2 hours before it began to stake out good seats. So over the next few days, I'll post videos of the winners, the ABDC crews, and some candid footage of the crowd and the crews. Just be patient -- I'm going to Glee Live today (can't wait to see LXD!) so I've got limited time to process videos right now! But they'll be worth the wait.

Dumbo (Poreotix) workshop at Boogiezone NJ - report (with video) from Chris Bata

Chris Bata attended  Poreotix member Dumbo's workshop at Boogiezone on May 28, and sent this report:
Dumbo's Boogiezone class had a HUGE turnout, more than they really expected. And it was unfortunate that we were placed in the SMALLER ballroom for that class. The intense heat that accumulated in the room couldn't stop the students in the class. Their energy was absolutely amazing. Nothing compared to Law and Dumbo though. Great teachers by the way. They taught a rather fast and fun routine to the song Bulletproof by LaRoux. You could tell how focused they were, yet at the same time, they let the students know they were having fun in a way that made us do the same. To anyone on formspring.me who claims they were intimidated by Law and Dumbo (due to the seriousness of their answers), DON'T BE. We had the chance to meet them afterwards. We posed for pictures with them. And even got the chance to chat a little bit with them. Guys, I strongly encourage you to take a class with them, even just once. I hope to take classes with them again in the future. There was no word on who will be the next Boogiezone NJ class instructor, though, so sorry, I have no spoilers there. Until next time!

While America's Best Dance Crew is on hiatus, let's catch up on non-U.S. TV dance shows that featured major hip hop talent. Three examples sent to us by Robban: Robot Boys' 2008 appearance on Talent 2008 Denmark, Twisted Feet on Sweden's Got Talent 2010 (who will appear at Hip Hop International 2010 in Las Vegas this summer), and Tobias Mead in the current season of Britain's Got Talent. Happy Birthday, Nancy!

Have you noticed what a beautiful day it is today? Know why it's so beautiful? Well, it's Thursday, May 27, 2010, and that means it's Nancy's Birthday!!!! This is Sarah, by the way. It's not Nancy talking in the third person. Anyway, you should all know by now how hard Nancy works on this blog and how much she cares about dancing, so let's all feel extra grateful today, on this great day.

Here are a few ways you can celebrate Nancy's birthday on your own:
-Watch a Bollywood movie, particularly one with Aamir Khan in it.
-Pay attention to animals, especially anteaters, because she loves animals.
-Use your brain for once. I'm not implying anything about your intelligence, but just think about it. And don't be so rude. Rude people suck.
-Pay attention to dance stuff (although you probably already do that).
-Just wish her a happy birthday because she's great.

Happy birthday, Nancy! I hope you have a lot of fun! Food is power.

World of Dance NY May 29: All-star line-up for exhibition, industry showcase AND competition!

World of Dance New York returns on Saturday May 29. They booked a larger venue and MANY more acts. The cool thing that distinguishes WOD from other similar events is that it celebrates dance instead of just focusing on the competition. You'll see a raft of different styles and levels of expertise It gives many crews a chance to show their latest moves and many fans a chance to see their old favorites and find some new ones. The industry showcase features America's Best Dance Crew veterans including Poreotix, Blueprint Cru, Jungle Boogie, Static Noyze6, Beat Ya Feet Kings, Southern Movement, Vogue Evolution, and Rhythm City. 

Exhibition crews (not competing) include: Culture Shock DC, Formality, Fr3sh Dance Company, Future Shock, Kick Rock Crew, GnC, Mass Appeal, Mighty Shock, Project Nailz, Side Project and the Professionals.

There are  25 competitors including many familiar to people who follow the ABDC auditions and other competitions. These include: EPIC Motion, Fr3sh Juniors, Full Force, Part Time Models, Project D, Rhythmology, Static Noyze, World Class, and WyldStyl. And there will be a lot of vendors with new merchandise. I'll be there; I strongly recommend East Coast dance fans to join me.

'Street Dance 3D' tops the weekend British Box office - watch trailer here

According to the UK Telegraph, 'Street Dance 3D' earned 1.8 milliion pounds during its opening weekend in the UK, beating out Prince of Persia and Robin Hood in earnings. The film features Britain's Got Talent veterans George Sampson (who won BGT in 2008) and dance crews Diversity (which won BGT over Susan Boyle) and Flawless in a story about a dance crew forced to work with ballet dancers at the Royal Dance School in exchange for practice space.

To quote the review in EntertainmentWise:"A so-so plot and script is reprieved by the fact that ‘StreetDance 3D’ looks amazing, sounds great and is exactly what lovers of the American alternatives are looking for- a fun and funky film." The Telegraph comments, "it’s hard to resist any film incorporating both the insult “tutu tits” and a food fight in leotards. As branded as it all feels, being a baldly strategic merger of various London cultural initiatives, the choreographed routines and editing have such dizzy energy they carry it aloft."

Poreotix appeared at Myx Mash in San Francisco on May 22, 2010 along with T-Pain, Brown Eyed Girls, and Bruno Mars. Jonas Approved has a review along with some great photos (like the one above). Froiboimon Youtube Channel has a video of Poreotix group performance with a sound mix that incorporated quotes from America's Best Dance Crew judges JC Chasez, Omarion, and Lil Mama, with some Kanye West thrown in.

Beat Freak Rino Nakasone joins the Pussycat Dolls

Pussycat Dolls founder Robin Antin announced the PussyCat Dolls lineup on Twitter. The only original member still with the group is Nicole Scherzinger. New members include Rino Nakasone-Razalan of the Beat Freaks, Kherrington Payne (who appeared in Fame and as a contestant on So You Think You Can Dance), Vanessa Curry (an ex-LA Lakers dancer), Jenny Robinson (appeared in 2 'Bring it On' movies and on Glee), and Jamie Lee Ruiz (ex Miami Heat dancer). New Quest Interview: Strange Fans and travel plans

Quest Crew was interviewed during their recent visit to Calgary. They sway a lot and talk to MabuhayCalgaryNews about their impressions of Calgary ("Everybody's really tall!"), usual and unusual fan appreciation (including voodoo dolls, Puma asking for their cellphones), their travel plans, and dealing with injuries. Congratulations - Jason Cabacungan (Swagger Crew) getting married today; watch the proposal again!

Jason Cabacungan of Swagger Crew (America's Best Dance Crew Season 5) proposed to his girlfriend Treena while the crew was in Los Angeles for the show. Today's the wedding day, and -- of course! -- Swagger Crew will be performing at the reception. We hope to have pictures and videos to share soon!

Video: Beat Freak Teresa and Poppin Pete: What is (and isn't) Hip Hop Dance?

StrifeTV merged interviews with Teresa Espinoza (Beat Freaks) and Poppin Pete (Electric Boogaloos) to answer to the question:  What is Hip Hop Dance? The two had strong feelings that the term is being misused and that too many other styles are being included as part of 'commercial hiphop'.

Unusual casting call: Hip Hop Group needed for wedding, with potential for good publicity

For serious dance crews looking for some publicity or exposure: this just hit my mailbox: 
"We are very interesting in booking one of the top hip hop dance troupes for a spectacular performance at the historic Andrew Mellon on Constitution Avenue in Washington, DC for Saturday June 12th.  The troupe of between 9 to 15 dancers will be performing  at approx. 10 pm that evening for the finale of a major wedding reception with 550 guests at a sit-down black-tie dinner.  All guests will be the elite of Washington, DC and the event will be covered by The Washington Post newspaper and the Washingtonian magazine.  We will appreciate hearing from you really quickly!  Please email  Michele Granger at verachawla@gmail.com or call 301-928-1484."

Eleven-year old Atticus Shaffer, star of ABC-TV's 'The Middle' appeared on the Jimmy Kimmel show on May 19 talking about chickens, quicksand, music, and America's Best Dance Crew. Watch the whole whimsical interview starting around 25:00 (just after the second commercial). At 30:00 Atticus describes how he's learned to do a robot dance from watching ABDC and demonstrates the moves to 'The Safety Dance.'

Fox News 11 noticed that Asian-Americans have a strong role in hip hop dance, and report about it. My favorite part: Kaba Modern founder Arnel Calvario (name misspelled in the video) talks about how ABDC producers have asked him if he has some crews with non-Asian members who can audition. Video: Glee's outstanding 'Safety Dance' featuring Isaac (Heavy Impact), Harry Shum Jr (LXD) & many others

Glee doesn't usually make dance a focus of the episode. But on their 'Dream On' episode, there are two must-watch dance numbers. 'The Safety Dance' has Isaac Taulaulelei from Heavy Impact as an extra, with strong performances by Glee regulars/professional dancers Harry Shum Jr(LXD) and Heather Morris (and many other dancers) in an outstanding dream sequence/flash mob staging. The final song 'Dream a little Dream' features Shum in a dance duet.

Glee dance alert tonight, including guest appearance by Heavy Impact's Isaac

Heavy Impact's Isaac appears on Glee tonight. He is one of the featured dancers for "The Safety Dance". The program also shows off more of Harry Shum's (LXD) dance skills than usual, in both "The Safety Dance" and "Dream a Little Dream." I'll post these once available on Hulu or Fox. Week 3 ABDC Blowup Solution: Swagger Crew

For week 3 of our America's Best Dance Crew Blowup contest, we showed you the shoes of a performing crew and asked you to identify them. Here's the blowup:

Many people got it, though we've had a dropoff in number of entries and accuracy since the first two (easy) weeks. The Week 4 ABDC Blow-up Challenge will be posted tomorrow.

Summer Intensive Dance Camp 2010 teachers: TM, Poreotix, Boxcuttuhz, Kaba Legacy, Heavy Impact & many more

Team Millennia Dance Studio has an all-star lineup of teachers for their three Summer Intensive Dance Camp 7 sessions. The 6 members of Poreotix have been added to the roster that already included members of Team Millennia, Kaba Legacy, Boxcuttuhz, Heavy Impact, Choreo Cookies, Inside the Box, Sheroes, CADC, and other prominent West Coast Crews. SI7 is the largest dance camp in the United States, designed to "help new and aspiring dancers to become better technically and physically in hopes of becoming "a better all-round dancer".The camp is held in La Habra, CA with three sessions: June 7-July 2, July 5- 30, August 2-27. Randy Jackson on The View: There WILL be an ABDC Season 6

Randy Jackson appeared on The View on May 17 2010. He tells the hosts that there will be a sixth season for America's Best Dance Crew and mentions that he loves the energy and comraderie of ABDC. New Conan O'Brien show to shoot on ABDC's stage at Warner Bros. starting November 2010

The Huffington Post reports: "Conan O'Brien will host his new TBS talk show from a California studio that most recently housed "America's Best Dance Crew."... His show begins in November, and will be recorded on the Warner Brothers lot in Burbank...Warners' Stage 15 was where "All The Presidents Men," "Batman Returns," "Ghostbusters," "The Perfect Storm," "The Music Man," "Gremlins," "Blazing Saddles" and many other films were made."

What does this mean for ABDC? Who knows. They might start a Season 6 by summer so they could vacate in time, they could move to a different stage, or...

Exclusive interview: Fanny Pak on keeping it fresh, mannequins and other weird props, 5 year plans & more

We spoke to Fanny Pak before their exhibition performance at the Main Event 2 in New Jersey in April 2010. They were given an extremely small dressing room, so the interview is done through the mirror which gives it a pretty weird effect that enhances that Fanny Pak experience. Anyway, we talked about how they perform with a split crew (Meg and Matt were in Cancun at the time), audience reactions, why their shows are never the same, what they want to be doing in the future, and their fan support at FannyPak.com and at shows.  Click here to watch their performance at The Main Event 2.

MTV just released the music video for Minus the Bear's 'My Time'. Beat Freak LindseyB contributed concept choreography and the video features Beat Freaks membersr Shorty and Bonita. Another featured dancer is Marie Poppins, who tore it up at Hip Hop International 2009 and was an original member of the group that became We Are Heroes.

Creating Opportunities website: Resource for dancers who want to build their careers

Dancers and choreographers Chonique Sneed (who was also a America's Best Dance Crew audition judge) and Lisette Bustamente just launched a new website for dancers: Creatingopps.com. Creating Opportunities has been developed to inspire young dancers with knowledge, tips, information and feedback so they can expand their opportunities as a dancer in the industry.  Their goal is to help dancers and choreographers find out what it is that sets them apart and how to make it work for them. Young Hollywood talked to JabbaWockeeZ when they were preparing for the Las Vegas MUS.I.C. show. They talk about the show anddemonstrate some anti-gravity moves, the glide, and the wave.

JabbaWockeeZ Interview: ABDC should "change up the format" - a Real World or Road Rules Challenge?

LA Times talked to JabbaWockeeZ in Las Vegas as they prepare to open the MUS.I.C. show. They talk about what it's like to do a 30-minute show, the highlights of their crew career, and what it was like to return to the America's Best Dance Crew stage for the Champions for Charity show. 

Most intriguing quotes: they talk about whether ABDC has 'jumped the shark', whether the good crews have all been exhibited, and what it would take to make the show pop again: 
"There are definitely some great crews out there that represent for the dance scene, and then for the underground dance scene, too, that a lot of people don't know about. A lot of them do audition, but some of them just don't get kept. Whether they don't go with the show's themes or whatever, I do think that having this show has helped a lot of crews evolve and want to learn other styles of dance.... As far as the future of the show -- it still has a good chance of being great again because there are still a lot of crews out there that strive for excellence and want to be on that plateau. I think the main thing that I would add is to maybe change up the format a little bit. Maybe doing the show in a different location or something where they could give the dancers an even greater challenge... Maybe kind of like a "Real World" or "Road Rules" type of challenge.  But as far as dance, it always evolves and gets better -- you can see it throughout the past five seasons -- that there have been so many different styles."

Congratulations Hype 5-0 - Special recognition by Mayor of Honolulu!

On May 12, 2010, Hype 5-0 was given special recognition by Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hanneman for their performance on America's Best Dance Crew Season 5. Congratulations!

BreakEFX Updates with video: BreakEFXTV, Verve Collizion, Vail International Dance Festival, member changes

Here's an update on BreakEFX, who went home too early (IMO) in ABDC's Season 5:

• Cameron Hobbs (the dancer injured on the show)  went through major ACL reconstructive surgery.Post surgery, Cameron was told that he would have a nine month recovery time before he could even think to dance again. He has since surpassed the doctors initial estimate in recovering time and has become the his doctors "poster child for recovery".He and fellow crew member, Mikey Ruiz started BreakEFX TV at BreakEFX Youtube Channel. 
• One recent post on BreakEFX TV is a trailer for the Verve Collizions Hip Hop Competition in Boulder, CO. BreakEFX won this competition twice and sponsored it this year. Other  guest performances this year included Choreo Cookies and Team Millenia.: 

• BreakEFX have been named the official ambassadors of Hip Hop for the Vail International Dance Festival in Vail, Colorado in August 2010. It's literally the first time hip hop has been asked to participate in the prestigious festival. They will be closing the week of events with an hour and a half full length production including live DJ's and percussion band. 
• Member Eppie Deleon has left BreakEFX and "resigned all association" after being arrested for alleged sex with a 15-year old. He has denied all charges, according to Fox KDVR: "I have resigned all association to BreakEFX crew to ensure that the personal legal accusations by the Lamar Police Department do not represent, affect or harm the well being of BreakEFX."

Mailbox: Rhythm City wins international competition; Omarion interview

• Congratulations to Rhythm City! They won the Dance2Dance InternationalCompetition in Zurich Switzerland, in their first competition afterAmerica's Best Dance Crew.
•  Omarion spoke to Honey Magazine recently about his impact on ABDC, working with Lil Mama, Kim Kardashian, and his art. His discussion of  ABDC begins around 2:52
