Fan Report -- ABDC Live Tour in Atlantic City

A fan report on the America's Best Dance Crew Live tour: "Hey Nancy, It's Jon Jon giving you an update on my dance crew concert experience at Atlantic City, NJ. Just want to say it was the best show I've seen! Not only did I have floor seats but I got to bump into the JBWKZ and BREAKSK8 on the boardwalk! Both crews were really crew and even posed for some pictures with me."
Here's one of Jon Jon's Youtube videos from the show:

Here's a picture of some of the merchandise for sale at the event.
Click here for more of the awesome crew pictures. Thanks Jon Jon!

Cookin' with Boogie Bots!

Okay, this one is a bit unusual...but I wish I'd been there. ABDC's Boogie Bots, Distorted X, and Xtreme Dance Force appeared at the Young Chef's Academy in McAllen, TX on Sept. 29 to dance and... to cook. According to The Monitor, "Boogie Bots stayed in the spotlight for most of the event. The five dancers prepared a few dishes in front of the audience, including chicken salad sandwiches, ham and cheese roll-ups and mini apple tarts. They even danced a little, while chopping and mixing."

Miguel Almario of Boogie Bots did impressions of famous chefs while the others played with the food. The crews also answered audience questions, danced, and did backflips for the select audience. That's Robert Lewis of Xtreme Dance Force in the photo. Read all about it here.

We had no idea Boogie Bots was so multi-talented. They have an open invitation to my house anytime. I'll even clean up the dishes afterwards.

JabbaWockeeZ interview: Kevin Brewer

Kevin Brewer opened up to the Schenectady Daily Gazette. This one is a must-read for JabbaWockeeZ and ABDC fans, with detailed and really thoughtful answers on topics like the differences of being on America's Best Dance Crew Live vs. on the TV show, hip-hop culture, his love of freestyling and other dance styles, and his admiration for the other JabbaWockeez. Read it here. Favorite quotes:
  • Why he dances: "It was about growing and understanding myself, physically articulating what I felt, hearing the music and seeing what could happen physically at the same time. There was always a wow factor and a deep connection to the music.”
  • Hip-hop's repuration as a steppingstone to crime: "There is the dark side, but there is a dark side to everything. Hip-hop is not about street cred to be legitThe true essence of hip-hop is love and freely expressing yourself. If you express yourself honestly, people will respect you. There is a tapestry to hip-hop. The crew owns a piece of that. It’s a dope culture.”

JabbaWockeeZ interview: Phi Nguyen

JabbaWockeeZ Phi Nguyen talked to NguoiViet.com about the crew's beginnings, what they're up to, what it was like on ABDC and in the tour, and other topics. Read it here in NewAmerican Media (the original article is in Vietnamese). Our favorite bits:
  • JabbaWockeeZ inspirations - life and cartoons
  • Phil is afraid of the ocean and likes pho

Review - ABDC Live Tour Performance In New York

I attended the sold-out America’s Best Dance Crew Live show in New York on September 23, fourth stop in the 25-city tour. Kudos to the producers of America’s Best Dance Crew Live tour for translating solitary small-screen pleasures into a massive big-stage celebration.

ABDC - "Processing dance styles like Velveeta"?

Robert Johnson (a respected dance critic for the Newark Star Ledger) slams America's Best Dance Crew Live Tour. Read his review here; then read my critique of the critique. His criticism is worth reading because it articulates why some people shun ABDC as being inauthentic, derivative, and tamed for the masses and commercial gain.

My take:
  • TV is not going to spotlight crews criticizing the establishment. That doesn't make the crews' dance moves any less athletic or artistic
  • These crews ARE authentic -- they formed years before ABDC first aired in 2008. The crews honed their craft in both dance studios and on street corners. I've watched a lot of street-style dance over the years and believe that many of the ABDC crews are extending the form with innovative moves and combinations. Also, unlike all the other TV shows, these crews do their own choreography, which makes the show so much fresher than any other dance show around.
  • Yeah, there are a lot of gimmicks and superficial identities on ABDC. That makes it fun. There's also solid dancing behind the masks and skates.
  • I applaud MTV for exposing people to hip-hop dancing. I've talked to NY City street crews who are working it more now that more people are stopping and watching (and dropping coin). The exposure can also lead to a larger audience for more innovative and controversial choreographers.
What do you think?

ABDC Live Tour Meet & Greet in New York

Blogging America's Best Dance Crew was invited, along with 20 other lucky fans, to meet the dance crews after the ABDC Live Tour in New York on September 23. Though the crew members were obviously exhausted, they mingled for close to an hour, signing shirts and programs, posing for pictures, and talking with the fans. What we learned about their experiences:
  • Downside: many are losing weight and sleep, while spending more time on buses than they could have imagined
  • Upside: working and joking with the other crews, getting to perform live, seeing new places, and finding out just how many fans they've got!
Click here for more photos of JabbaWockeeZ, Super Cr3w, ASIID, and Fanny Pak from the meet and greet. And, tomorrow we'll talk about the show itself, complete with pictures and audio.

Season 3 auditions - another way to enter!

As we've previously mentioned, auditions for Season 3 of America's Best Dance Crew will run October 11-25 in 8 cities. The only way to make it on to the show is to attend one of these open casting calls. However, you can submit a 1-minute video of your crew performing your hottest routine and if your performance impresses the producers, they'll make sure your crew gets in front of the judges at one of the open auditions.

If you'd like to submit a video and get it to the judges, click here for the information at Gotcast.com. It's free and it couldn't hurt!

Mailbox: JabbawockeeZ Halloween, ABDC Tour Review, Shane Sparks, Lil Mama, Status Quo

  • The MySpace JBWKZ site will sell JabbaWockeeZ Halloween costumes, complete with mask, gloves, shirt, and baseball cap. It'll come in kid and adult sizes. Read about it (and buy it soon) here.
  • Read Aohitomi's description of the ABDC Live Tour. We think he captured it better than Rolling Stone.
  • According to Creators.com, Shane Sparks wants to create a new type of dance video. "It's not going to be just an artist doing a video with choreography in it. I'm talking about real dance videos so the edit is based around the choreography and not the artist. I'm going to be the first to do that. It's going to be the biggest thing on Earth."
  • The ABDC Live tour continues to have surprise guests. Lil Mama performed at the New York City show last night and Status Quo will perform tomorrow in Boston

Fanny Pak Live Chat on Stardoll

Fanny Pak spent an hour on-line with young fans from about 100 countries, doing a live chat on Stardoll.com. • Fanny Pak favorites (movie, dog breed, animal to eat, ice cream, stars, books, etc)
  • Forced choice preferences (Avril vs. Paris, half full vs. half empty, Boyzone vs. Take That, etc.)
  • What it's like to be in Fanny Pak (what do crazy fans do, what do you guys do REALLY, what it's like being on tour, the funniest thing to happen to them)

Rolling Stone Review of ABDC Live Tour

Rolling Stone reviewed the kick-off performance of the America's Best Dance Crew Live tour in Miami. You can read it here. Highlights of the review:

JabbaWockeeZ interview at the ABDC Live Tour Rehearsals

Donna of Honey with Sole concluded her series of interviews for Blogging America's Best Dance Crew (best field reporter ever!) by talking with the guys from JabbaWockeeZ. Though it's a long interview, listen to the whole thing -- she really got to know the men behind the mask. Not a whole lot of 'news' here (they have a LOT of contractual restraints on what they can say!) but you can get a good sense of the fun and comraderie here. Some of the intriguing bits from the tape and her interview:
  • They really liked touring Hawaii, Guam, Malaysia and... New Jersey
  • After the tour, they're taking their families on a cruise to Puerto Rico. No work, just fun
  • Like all the other crews, they got NO free tickets for the tour for their family or friends
  • At the time of the interview (only 7 days before the first show) they still didn't know what solo dance they'd be performing as their opening.
  • They 'seem' to have a move called the Soup Cooler. Mmm...
  • They like to play Frogger before rehearsals
Listen here: Click here for more JabbawockeeZ photos from the rehearsals.

JabbaWockeeZ in Leona Lewis Video

Leona Lewis' new video "Forgive Me" featuring JabbaWockeeZ has finally been released. All the Youtube versions are being pulled for copyright issues; so far this website seems to be a reliable source of videos. If this doesn't work, try MTV!

America's Best Dance Crew -- more popular than Obama?

Curious factoid from the Wall Street Journal: when Barack Obama texted the message announcing Biden as vice-president, it went to a little less than 1 million cellphones in the campaign's database. In contrast, America's Best Dance Crew exchanged messages with about 1.5 million different individuals during Season 2. So, ABDC had 50% more active mobile fans than the Democratic nominee.

Super Cr3w Interview at ABDC Live Tour Rehearsals

Day 4 of the joint interview reporting between Blogging America's Best Dance Crew and Honey with Sole, covering the ABDC Live Tour rehearsals. Today, we've got the exclusive pictures of Super Cr3w. Check out the audio interview on Honey with Sole. Donna tells you what it was like to talk to Super Cr3w in rehearsal and posts the audio interview. Among the many revelations:
  • Rockadile was sick this week and missed some of the rehearsals, but will definitely be ready for the first show in Miami
  • For their tour intro, Super Cr3w will reprise (and improve) their dance to "Don't Touch Me" by Busta Rhymes, which they first performed in Week 6
  • Season 3 of America's Best Dance Crew will feature only 8 episodes, down from 10 in Season 2
  • Super Cr3w will go back on tour after ABDC Live Tour ends. Dates and places are still being negotiated, but include shows in Hawaii, Canada, and Guam.
  • Now that Super Cr3w is done with ABDC, Do Knock plans to keep the Super Cr3w name alive by setting aside time to talk with fans

A New Old Role for JC Chasez?

JC Chasez may become a lot busier real soon. According to today's interview with Access Hollywood, Lance Bass says that "the odds are good" for an NSYNC Reunion. According to Bass, “We’ve always discussed it. It’s always a possibility and we still owe some records to the record companies.” At the ABDC finale, JC adamantly denied this rumor. So who are you going to believe -- JC or Lance? Click here to read the whole story.

Has Success Spoiled Fanny Pak?

Trick question to get your attention. Answer: they're a LOT better off than a few months ago-- Glenda Morales is no longer homeless, living with fellow FP-er Tiffani Grant. Adoring fans recognize the crew out on the street, and they'll be making real money from the ABDC tour and Fanny Pak clothing line. But, based on this Pacific Rim Photo Press video (shot just before the VMA challenge), they're far from blase about their newfound fame:

Win a Signed Super Cr3w shirt: Super Cr3w Tattoo Contest

More from Honey with Sole (ABDC fans should definitely bookmark her blog). Super Cr3w's Do-Knock posted on MySpace that he has a contest for fans: designing a tattoo for him. He writes that "it can be anything from a simple SC3 to anything to symbolize the crew and the three crews in Supercr3w...I'm sure you guys will make some dope designs."

The winner gets a Super Cr3w T shirt signed by the entire crew, plus the knowledge that your art is permanently on Do-Knock's skin. Deadline - September 20, 2008. Read the details at Honey with Sole's Blog, or on Do-Knock's MySpace Page (which is also where you send your entries). Thanks, HoneywithSole!

VMA Highlight #2: Fanny Pak Presents!

Fanny Pak won the America's Best Dance Crew VMA Challenge. I love Matt's run down the aisle and their goofy enthusiasm. Last night, I didn't even realize that they were the headless bodies 'presenting' the nominees; it took a second viewing to see their Fanny Paks. Watch for yourself:

VMA Highlight #1: The Dance-off

Last night, MTV devoted about 3 1/2 hours to the VMAs. There was A LOT of time used by an obscure British comic, and about 9 minutes of America's Best Dance Crew action. We'll fast forward it for you obsessive ABDC types. First, here's Fanny Pak dancing to "Damaged::

All about Fanny Pak's Cara Horibe

MidWeek Magazine profiled Fanny Pak's Cara Horibe a few weeks ago. Click here to read the article. My favorite revelations:
  • She worked as a cruise ship dancer
  • She trained at the same dance group as Janet Jackson's choreographer and a finalist for So You Think You Can Dance
  • She almost gave up on dancing to work at her family's hair salon until she received a text message from Matt Cady about forming Fanny Pak and competing on Americas Best Dance Crew

Today's Mailbox: Phresh Select, Super Cr3w, Shane Sparks

A grab bag today for you:

  • Buddy TV talks to Super Cr3w, who hope ABDC launches a new era of respect for breakdancing
  • Starpulse report: Shane Sparks participated in the Nike + Human Race in Los Angeles last Saturday. He revealed that he might be doing some "stuff" with Nike and talked about his role on America's Best Dance Crew and SYTYCD

Backstage after the VMA: More Crews Interviews

Talk of Fame went backstage at the VMAs and interviewed each of the crews. My favorite part: Kaba Modern's admission that they would NOT have wanted to compete in Season 2

Status Quo to Perform in Connecticut Sept.12

Status Quo is expected to perform in a competition of dance crews, drill teams and crunk dancers on September 12 in Vernon, CT (near Hartford). The event is organized by Anthony Thomas ("Popkorn"), a juvenile detention officer who uses dance to reach and teach kids in local detention centers. You've got to read this Hartford Courant article about Thomas -- he is righteous. Then -- if you possibly can -- go to this competition, support this worthy effort and report back to us!

More Recapper Reactions to the VMA Challenge

AndYadontstop loves 4 out of 5 of the competing crews. And that's him in the picture, wearing the mask he won in our contest to name the top 4 crews. Fierce!

Tubular is bitter that SoReal Cru didn't win and isn't going on the America's Best Dance Crew Live tour. He also agrees with the judges' choice of SoReal Cru, Kaba Modern, and Fanny Pak as the top three.
