But they're going up against some of the favorites to win, including Jackie Levancho, fighting gravity, and the magicians.  They just need to be top 5 to go to the finales, and so they need all your votes."
You can vote on-line here as of 11PM ET.

Enter Week 8 of ABDC Master Mix Contest now!

We're at Week 8 of our 12-week ABDC Master Mix Contest, completely created by Dirtface X. In this variant on Name that Tune, our video contains a sample of an ABDC Master Mix, followed by a judge's comment about the routine. Your challenge: identify the tune AND the crew who performed it. You can use the tune name announced by Mario Lopez, instead of trying to identify the name of the exact song in the clip..The mixes were prepared by District78.com (though only the Season 5 mixes are currently on their website). Full episodes of the programs can be found on MTV.com. Whoever can correctly identify the most routines (crew and song title) will be the winner.  Click here for all the rules. NEW RULE: I'm only accepting the first answer you send in (no changes) so take your time to get it right the first time!

ABDC Master Mix Week 7 answer: Boxcuttuhz dancing to 'Bonafied Lovin'

The Master Mix clip was down to 5 seconds this week, but it fooled nobody. All of the 92 submitted entries got the right answer: Boxcuttuhz dancing to 'Bonafied Lovin' during America's Best Dance Crew Season 3. We also accepted 'Music Sounds Better with You' and 'Night to Fall' which were heard in the 5 second clip.  FYI -- each week, we'll accept the song name that Mario Lopez announced on America's Best Dance Crew, so you don't HAVE to seek out the name of the song actually heard in the shorter clip!  Here's the clue again, followed by the full routine. This contest and its videos were conceived and created by Dirtface X -- Thanks!! And, come back tomorrow for the next installment.

Video trailer: Ninjaboi casts his ideal but realistic ABDC Season 6 -- what do you think?

Still no concrete news about America's Best Dance Crew Season 6 from MTV or the show's producers. So in the meantime, Ninjaboi is doing his part to fill the gap by creating a scenario and trailer for how he'd do it. Unlike Brandon's equally excellent job in imagining an ABDC All-Star season, Ninjaboi selected crews that haven't yet appeared on ABDC but could realistically expect to be cast. His picks: Instant Noodles, Elektrolytes, Sweet and Sour, Marvelous Motion, Xternal Technique, Second 2 None, Phunk Phenomenon, Ridonkulous, and Point Blank. As we've come to expect from Ninaboi, he has carefully thought out the picks, provided rationales for all and even prepared slogans to describe each  (Heaven help me -- I can even hear Mario saying these!):

"So some of you may question why I picked the crews I did for the lineup...First, I’m assuming that the producers will go ahead and continue the “Regions” division as they have been doing, simply because the West Coast is still dominating, so they want to make sure that that subplot story line is still going on.  Some may not like it, but I’m going for a more realistic lineup with crews that I know.  That means that crews that have said that they will not audition again (BreakEFX, Lost Kidz) are not considered.  Also, crews must fit regulations (minimum of 5 members), and historically crews that have members from previous seasons rarely get past auditions, so I’m not considering those crews either (i.e., Beast Mode)."
Click here to read the rest -- you'll be glad you did! And, thanks Ninjaboi!

Unusual interview: Fanny Pak & Beat Freaks hang out, joke around & describe tonight's EP release party

Pacific Rim went to the home of Matt Cady (Fanny Pak) to talk  to Fanny Pak and Beat Freaks about tonight's Release party for Fanny Pak's 'Touch of Fanny'. This video shows the dancers with their guards down -- the antithesis of the stiff  and planned personas shown for most mass media performers. They are in area rug (not red carpet) mode, totally relaxed, and having fun. They talk about tonight's release party that will have a red carpet and performances by America's Best Dance Crew alums Fanny Pak, Beat Freaks, Kaba Modern, and Artistry in Motion (see poster above for details). I wish I was in LA tonight!

Video: ABDC battles SYTYCD!

AG (a reader and frequent commenter on this site) created a video with an intriguing concept -  a battle of the best hip hop dances on America's Best Dance Crew vs. So You Think You Can Dance. It's an interesting way to contrast the two shows (self-choreographed vs. professionally choreographed, pairs vs. teams, self-taught vs. professionally trained). And, it captures some of my favorite moments from both shows. From his Boogieotics Youtube Channel  -- Thanks AG!

Idea for some of our dancer/readers: Try to Join the LXD!

The Fanboyz episode of The LXD (shown here) presents the idea that the LXD are secretly recruiting members. The video shows a few fans watching a Colewaters.com video saying that you MIGHT catch the attention of the LXD recruiters if you  1. dance a unique style, 2. upload a video of it, and 3. are very patient.  Ideally the video should be shot in a real-life setting (e.g., school, workplace) rather than in a studio.

So, how about it? I know we've got some dancers here. We need to fight evil. So, if you've got the time and the will, go for it! Upload it, and send the links to me, to Cole Waters, and to the LXD's Facebook page! And thanks to Ninjaboi for the idea!

NAPPYTABS at HHI 2010: Urban Moves Workshop

Adorable husband and wife choreographers, Napoleon & Tabitha, hosted a well attended Urban Moves workshop at HHI2010 in Vegas. Here, some participants work on stage, while the rest were in the filled ballroom dancing along. In the clip, you can see Napoleon videotaping on his cell phone to post on their Twitter page! This was a HOT routine!

The Las Vegas Sun followed Kaba Modern at Hip Hop International with a wonderfully intimate look at the dance group's preparation for the competition. The article goes way beyond reporting, getting at what it feels like backstage. My favorite article quote (and I recommend you read the whole article!): "Waiting is the hard part. You can train your body to move, to fall backward on stage and plop without hurting yourself. After a while, it's muscle memory. Training your mind not to get your hopes up, to be okay with not going as far as you wanted to in a competition? That's more difficult."

Video: National Dance Day in Boston with Static Noyze, Fr3sh, Ridonkulous and more

Here's a video of the National Dance Day celebration for National Dance Day, posted on the Rashmile Youtube Channel. It features Juandi and Gus from Static Noyze 6 and Eunji Hong from Fr3sh, and many others from the Geek Chic/Ridonkulous/Static Noyze Dance Companies.  The dance crews felt like collaborating in order motivate people all over Boston to DANCE for the love of being able to move!

The crews are randomly mixed in the beginning doing the routine, then they split into their groups, starting with Project Nailz, MIT Ridonkulous, Static Noyze, Mocha Moves, and then Side Project (SidePro). They then came back together to do the National Dance Day Routine.  Thanks for the video, Adlai!

Podcast with BreakEFX Christa Lewis: working on the LXD, competing on ABDC and more

BreakEFX member Christa Lewis appears on 'Fanboyz', the latest episode of the LXD. We spoke a few weeks ago about many topics including: how she became involved with the LXD, an inside look at what it was like to film the episode, whether there is a pressure for female dancers to act weak and sexual, her favorite comic character, BreakEFX's experiences on America's Best Dance Crew (and whether BreakEFX would audition again) and upcoming plans. BTW -- her role in the episode was reduced because she hurt her ankle during filming; you can see her on crutches on the show!

More for The LXD Fans: SYTYCD Finale appearance, hilarious affiliated blog

-The stars of The LXD will perform on the August 12 season finale of So You Think You Can Dance
- Fanboyz (the latest episode) mentions a blog that tries to document the existence of the LXD and how to become a member. The blog does exist: Colewaters.com.  It's EXTREMELY funny, so read it! Sprinkled in with the LXD info are paranoid ravings about parental permission slips, frog meat in the cafeteria, and other gems.

Watch the LXD Episode 9 Now: Fanboyz

It's Wednesday, so the latest episode of The LXD is up on Hulu. This week: Fanboyz, starring Aja George, Terence Dickson, and Shonnie Solomon. It also features Christa Lewis (BreakEFX), Fresh Redding, Nick Demoura, and Rob Rich. The premise: people have heard rumors that you can join the LXD if you master a unique style of dance and videotape it. So, the nerdy videoclub members make some comic attempts to become superheroes.
