ABDC Blowup Contest Week 10 -- Enter now!

The end is here! Round 10 of our ABDC Blowup Contest is ready and waiting for you. We found a highlight in the MTV.com archives for America's Best Dance Crew and blew it up. The challenge: Name that crew and email your answer to ABDCContest@gmail.com. This contest is created by "The 4th ABDC Judge".  This is the final week of the contest.  Here's the official rules and info on the prize. This week's entries must be received by midnight on Monday July 5.

Here's the newgray-scaled image. This week's clue words - "Turning carrousel".  Read the tie-breaker rules below if you want some ideas on how to solve this. Good luck!

 

TIE BREAKER: We will probably need a tie-breaker to choose the contest winner. Here's the challenge: write a clever and solvable clue for the name of an ABDC crew. It can be any crew, whether or not they've already appeared in the contest. Use whatever for cluing as long as it's publicly available; the clue could be based on trivia, foreign languages, puns or wordplay, hexadecimal codes, whatever! If you're interested in trying some cryptic clues, here's a beginner's guide. "The 4th ABDC Judge" and I will pick a winner from the entries (possibly with outside consultations if we can't agree).  So, if you want to win, send us: 1. the answer to the Week 10 challenge, 2. your own clue for an ABDC crew name, and 3. the answer for your clue!

Strikers All-Stars (America's Best Dance Crew Season 3) are the latest crew to try to make their mark on America's Got Talent. They danced (as Strykers All Stars) on the June 29 episode and made it to the Las Vegas round.

LXD to premiere July 7: What questions would YOU ask the LXD dancers?

The Legion of Extraordinary Dancers (LXD) will premiere on July 7, 2010. The story of The LXD unfolds in three initial volumes, starting with Volume One: “The Uprising Begins” which chronicles the journey of seemingly ordinary people who discover they have extraordinary powers and must choose their place in an epic war between good and evil.  I've watched advance releases for three of the stories in Volume One.  The dancing is amazing (of course), and some stories manage to capture the excitement and feel of a great comic book.

Over the next week, I hope to conduct podcast interviews with one or more of the LXD stars. I welcome your input for these interviews. So, please leave some suggested questions in the comments below. As always, if I use your question I will mention your name during the podcast. 

And stay tuned for more LXD news. This show can definitely make your summer!

Answer to ABDC Blowup Contest Week 9: Sass x7

 There were only 4 correct entries this week! Last week, commenters were complaining that there were too many people with perfect scores, so the Week 9 was INTENDED to thin the herd! 

The blownup crew was Sass X7. Here's the picture we posted:

 The clue was a cryptic and was meant to be tricky. though one reader got the answer through the clue alone. It read:"Fractured science pop quiz: the crew with the most protons." The phrase 'fractured science' are carefully worded to tell you that it won't be straight science but  will use scientific terms in a cryptic fashion.  The scientific terms associated with protons are the atomic symbols (e.g., O=oxygen). Only 4 crew names could be broken into atomic symbols (I know because I tried!). Sass can be broken into 2 sulfur and one arsenic. AND -- you have x7, or multiplied by 7 (if you figured out the atomic symbol clue, the multiplier would be a red flag). So, the crew name is [2S (16 protons each) + 1AS (33 protons)] x7=455 protons.  This is tricky but I know we have some math/science jocks who I thought might enjoy the puzzle. And you could always solve by brute force and look for the picture on MTV.com!


Tomorrow's picture will also be grayscale. So, there is a good chance that many who didn't solve this week could still be tied for the prize. Don't give up hope!

Mailbox: Rhythm City performing at major charity event; Wii Dance 2 to feature Dance Crew Face-offs

Rhythm City will dance at the National Conference on Volunteering and Service on June 29, 2010. This is the world's largest gathering of volunteer and service leaders, with more than 5,000 people attending 

The Wii Just Dance 2 will be in stores October 14, 2010. It will feature new modes such as  Dance Crew Face-offs and will cater for up to eight players.

Mike Song (Kaba Modern) Interview: ABDC "100% unexpected...our initial goal was to be on TV for 5 seconds"

Steve Nguyen creates video interviews with artists on his SteveNguyenFlipHD Youtube Channel. Recently, he sat down with Kaba Modern Legacy's Mike Song (America's Best Dance Crew Season 1), who shows some signature moves and describes Kaba Modern's America's Best Dance Crew experience: why they auditioned, what they were expecting,  and what they learned on America's Best Dance Crew. Mike also talks about his first large public performance at Kollaboration 2003, how dancing replaced tennis in his life, and his most important life lessons.

So You Think You Can Dance announced a National Dance Day on July 31. ABDC and SYTYCD choreographers Napoleon and Tabitha D'umo choreographed a dance for the event and posted a video so that everyone can participate. Click here to read more about National Dance Day.

Video: Remote Control Crew on So You Think You Can Dance

Brian Gaynor auditioned for So You Think You Can Dance this season. He was rejected because his scoliosis limits his ability to dance all the styles on the show, but Executive Producer/Judge Nigel Lithgoe promised that SYTYCD would feature Gaynor's dance crew on a future show. The group is called Remote Control (also spelled Remote Kontrol, so I am not sure of the correct spelling!) and they appeared on the June 24 results show. What do you think?

Blueprint Cru walks the red carpet at MuchMusic's Video Music Awards

 
Blueprint Cru were among the celebrities walking the red carpet at the MuchMusic Video Music Awards on June 20, 2010. They sent some photos from their side of the carpet to show the frenetic scene and wrote "It's kind of weird going from being the backup dancer to being the ones signing the autographs!"

The clue was "Before America's Best Dance Crew, they WERE the Main Event!" The name of Ringmasters before ABDC was Main Event (sometimes spelled Main Eventt). If you searched BloggingBestDanceCrew.com for the term Main Event and went to the second page of the search, you could find our old posts with the Main Event audition for Season 3. 
Though we had many incorrect responses, we still have 21 people who have gotten all 8 blowups. So tomorrow's picture is in grayscale.You're welcome.

Video: Bollywood takes on Hip hop in 'Kites' dance number

The big production number in the new Bollywood film "Kites" is a hip hop dance competition supposedly taking place in Las Vegas. I don't know if star Hrithik Roshan did his own dancing, since it's pretty different than his earlier work. In any case, it's a compelling dance sequence that will probably be cut from the US release versions. Video from SominalTV Youtube Channel.

Dancers: Enter the Dr Pepper Video Dance Contest to be judged by John Chu!

Are you a REALLY good bboy/bgirl, hip hop dancer or jazz-funk dancer? Then enter the Dr Pepper online contest to win a trip to Los Angeles to hang out with John Chu and appear in a music video.

Donyelle Jones teaches workshops at BoogieZone in Los Angeles. She is notable as the only woman who has performed both on America's Best Dance Crew (Season 4's Artistry in Motion) and So You Think You Can Dance (Season 2). Video: Geo (ICONic) and Iconic Dancers perform at the Astaire Awards

On June 7, 2010, GEO Hubela ICONic choreographed a surprise performance for Kenny Ortega at the 2010 Astaire Awards at Gerald Lynch Theater in New York City.  GEO's cast of dancers included  America's Best Dance Crew Season 1's ICONic and 10 young dancers, 4 of which were under the age of 12. GEO's remix of "Newsies"  creatively paired broadway-chic with urban hip hop. The music was created by Mark "Biz" Burke, a colleague of GEO, and music producer for the Jabbawockeez Vegas show MUS.I.C. Interesting note: GEO choreographed the performance within four days, totaling eight hours of rehearsal -- sounds like their ABDC schedule! Video from Gendance1 Youtube Channel.

Jungle Boogie interview: falling asleep at the ABDC auditions, their favorite ABDC judge

Jungle Boogie (America's Best Dance Crew Season 5) talked to WPXI.com in Pittsburgh about their upcoming workshops and performances on June 18-19.  It's a full program according to Adrian --“We’ll be teaching seven classes. We’ll do a mock audition and give some criticism. On Saturday, we’ll have a showcase, and the people will perform. We’ll also be performing." Click here for all the details.

Highlights from the article:

• Antwon Thomas:“At the audition, we fell asleep because we were so tired, but when they called our names to go into the room, we brought energy”
• While the group wasn’t formed until recently, the members have known each other for a long time -- some for their entire lives...“We all go bowling together,” said Carter. “We go out to the club and dance for free.”
• "Lil Mama was the group's favorite judge. She has a lot of personality. You could really tell she believed in us," said Thomas."

TiVO Alert: Justin Bieber video of "Somebody to Love" with Poreotix & Beat Freaks to premiere on SYTYCD tonight!

Justin Biebers' new video for his "Somebody to Love" remix featuring Usher will make its world premiere during the live results show of "So You Think You Can Dance" Thursday night, June 17 at 9 p.m. ET. The video also features Poreotix and Beat Freaks. 

Justin will not appear on SYTYCD, but Usher will represent and also perform 'OMG'. Click here to watch behind-the-scenes footage of the taping of "Somebody to Love."

Justice Crew won Australia's Got Talent this season. I first saw this crew at Hip Hop International 2009 where they almost made the finals (click here to watch) and think they could medal at this year's HHI  if they are attending again. ABDC Nominated for 2010 Teen Choice Award -- vote daily for your favorites!

The 2010 Teen Choice Award nominees have been announced. America's Best Dance Crew is nominated in the Best Reality Competition Show category. It is competing against American Idol, America's Next Top Model, Dancing with the Stars, and Project Runway. The show will air on Fox August 9 at 8pm ET/PT.

The voting is now open. You can vote once a day online at TeenChoiceAwards.com.

Answer to ABDC Blowup Contest Week 7: Royal Flush

The contest must be getting harder -- we had far fewer correct entries this week. The crew in our Week 7 blowup photo was Royal Flush, from America's Best Dance Crew Season 5. Here's the picture we posted:

 The clue was: 'What you get when you embarrass Beat Ya Feet Kings!' The answer used the royal connection (Kings and Royal). And, when you're embarrassed you flush with color (no we did not refer to any other meaning of flush here. Get your mind out of the toilet.)

Maryss & Rino (Beat Freaks, GeminiZ) at E3 Expo dancing to 'Beat It' (high quality video)

E3 Expo (The huge electronics/gaming event) E3 is currently going on now. At the Ubisoft press conference,R Rino and Maryss (from Beat Freaks and GeminiZ) danced with the "This is It" dancers to Michael Jackson's "Beat It" to introduce a new video game. Below is a video of the dance (highest quality since it's from Ubisoft).
 
Here is the official video of the full press conference. The actual conference starts at 01:23:10 (lots of blank space for you to skip). It's choppy but redeems itself by using Joel McHale as the opening spokesman and showing clips of a lot of new games. The Michael Jackson segment is at the end at 02:49:30.

According to the LA Times: "The untitled game, which is scheduled to come out this year, will allow players to learn and copy some of Jackson's most famous dance moves, as well as sing along as they already do in games such as Rock Band and Guitar Hero: World Tour." Update on Blueprint: Movie deal, Meeting the Queen of England!

Blueprint Cru has some VERY interesting activities since America's Best Dance Crew:

• On June 18th, they will be shooting scenes for a French Canadian movie called 'Sur le Rythme'
• On July 1st they will perfom at Canada Day in Ottawa and meet Queen Elizabeth! Click here for information on the event.

Dtrix (Quest) talks about being a SYTYCD All-star: "Shocked" that he was chosen!

Video: Jeff Viray (Team Millennia) teaching workshop and helping American Cancer Society

On June 8, 2010, Jeff Viray of Team Millennia taught a class after being on hiatus for a while due to his father battling cancer and passing on along with his mother continued fight in battling breast cancer. Jeff decided to teach a class for Boogiezone at the Focus Dance Center in Irvine, CA . Jeff dedicated the class to his father which was on the eve of his dad's birthday. All proceeds from his class was donated to Relay for Life an event hosted by the American Cancer Society. Pilipinas Got Talent finale today (June 13): top dancers & groups that made it to semi-finals

The current season of Pilipinas Got Talent included several outstanding dancers including Alex Carpena,  Snap Boyz, Experience Kids, and Hello World. These four were eliminated in the semi-fianl round; Click here to watch the auditions and semi-final performances for all these dancers!

Video: European flash mob for Eurovision Song Contest 2010

A massive Europe-wide dance flashmob was organized for this year's Eurovision Song Contest.
Eurovision is an annual competition held members of the European Broadcasting Union. Over a few days, each member country performs a song on live TV. International viewers get to vote for their favorites from the other countries.   The Contest has been broadcast since 1956 and is one of the most watched non-sporting events in the world. I wish something like Eurovision was created for dance groups, creating a World's Best Dance Crew. Thanks for the video link, Martin!

TiVO Alert: The return of Dtrix and Twitch, on SYTYCD June 10

So You Think You Can Dance will bring together their 10 all-stars with the 11 new conestants on the June 10 show. According to various spoilers posted on TelevisionwithoutPity.com:

"Just got back from the taping. Well Transdrew said it all, but fans set your DVR's you'll want to watch these numbers more than once. No matter what I thought during the auditions this group of 11 are incredible. I'm short so I couldnt see their feet but all in all it was impressive for the first show. Can't wait to see how this translates to TV."

[From Transdrew on IDF]: "Tabitha and Napoleon described their dance as an induction into the sytycd family and so Dominic, Twitch and Comfort were all supposed to be helping Jose out. Twitch stole the show for me in this dance, except for one move at the end with Jose and Dominic that involved the two somersaulting over each other while taking off Jose’s sweatshirt. "

YakFilms produced a nifty video showing all aspects of World of Dance New York. Isaac from Heavy Impact also teaches a class at IDA. His hip hop groove classes are Thursdays 7-8pm and Saturdays 2-3pm. Marie Poppins -- one of the original We are Heroes who did not appear on America's Best Dance Crew -- teaches beginning popping on Mondays from 8-9pm

The clue read:"Came Out With Brilliance! Oh Yes!!"  Many readers noticed that each of the words was capitalized, which is unusual. The capitalized letters spell out COWBOY, which was a common way of describing Southern Movement's sartorial style.
